π³πΎ Osgood Canal Greenway and Urban Trail – Hiking Through Historic Burgaw, North Carolina
Simba and I visited and hiked the Osgood Canal Greenway and Urban Trail in Burgaw, North Carolina, a scenic walking route that combines peaceful wooded pathways, historic downtown streets, and the welcoming atmosphere of a small Southern town. Located in Pender County, this unique greenway follows portions of the Osgood Canal while connecting neighborhoods, community parks, and some of Burgaw's most interesting historic surroundings.
Unlike traditional hiking trails located entirely within forests or wilderness areas, the Osgood Canal Greenway offers a different kind of outdoor adventure. Its original route forms a roughly 2.6-mile loop, while more recent improvements have expanded Burgaw's overall greenway network to approximately four miles. Along the way, visitors encounter tree-lined paths, paved sidewalks, wooded areas, and residential streets that gradually transition into the town's historic downtown district.
What makes this trail particularly appealing is how naturally it blends outdoor recreation with everyday community life. Instead of traveling miles outside town to find a place to walk, residents and visitors can enjoy a scenic greenway that connects parks, neighborhoods, schools, and local landmarks.
For Simba and me, it was another opportunity to discover a quieter side of southeastern North Carolina while exploring a town with an interesting railroad history and a growing commitment to outdoor recreation.
πΏ Discovering the Osgood Canal Greenway
The Osgood Canal Greenway and Urban Trail is located in Burgaw, the county seat of Pender County, approximately 25 miles north of Wilmington. The trail follows portions of the Osgood Canal corridor while connecting several areas of the community through a combination of paved paths, sidewalks, and neighborhood streets.
The original greenway forms a roughly 2.6-mile loop through central Burgaw. With later expansions and connecting routes, the broader trail network now extends approximately four miles, offering additional opportunities to explore the town on foot or by bicycle.
What makes the route distinctive is its changing scenery. One section may pass through a peaceful wooded corridor beside the canal, while another follows a sidewalk through a residential neighborhood or approaches the historic downtown area.
This variety makes the trail feel less like a conventional out-and-back hike and more like a walking tour of Burgaw's natural landscapes and community character.
π The Historic Osgood Canal
One of the defining features of the greenway is Osgood Canal, the waterway that gives the trail its name. The canal has long been part of Burgaw's landscape, and its corridor now provides an attractive setting for walking, jogging, bicycling, and other outdoor activities.
Canals and drainage waterways have played important roles in the development of communities throughout North Carolina's coastal plain. With relatively flat terrain and areas prone to collecting water, managing drainage has historically been an important consideration for roads, farms, and growing towns.
Today, the Osgood Canal corridor serves an additional purpose as a recreational green space. Instead of being viewed simply as part of the town's water-management landscape, the surrounding area has become an inviting place for residents and visitors to enjoy nature.
The wooded sections along the canal provide a pleasant contrast to the nearby streets and buildings, creating moments when the trail feels surprisingly secluded despite remaining close to the center of Burgaw.
π² Peaceful Wooded Pathways and Natural Scenery
One of the most enjoyable aspects of hiking the Osgood Canal Greenway is the mixture of natural environments along the route. Tree-lined pathways and wooded sections provide opportunities to enjoy the outdoors without traveling far from town.
The surrounding vegetation creates a peaceful atmosphere, particularly in areas where the trail follows the canal and passes beneath mature trees. These sections offer a welcome break from the nearby streets and developed areas.
As the route continues, the scenery changes between wooded corridors, open spaces, residential neighborhoods, and downtown surroundings. Rather than following one continuous wilderness trail, visitors experience several different sides of Burgaw during the same walk.
For Simba and me, that variety made the hike especially interesting. There was always something different to see as we moved between the quieter natural sections and the town's more developed areas.
π Burgaw's Railroad History
The town of Burgaw, North Carolina, has a fascinating history closely connected to the expansion of railroads during the 19th century.
Like many communities throughout the southeastern United States, Burgaw developed around transportation routes that helped move agricultural products, lumber, supplies, and passengers between towns and larger commercial centers.
Railroads played a particularly important role in the growth of eastern North Carolina, connecting rural communities to regional markets and encouraging businesses to develop near rail stations.
Burgaw eventually became the county seat of Pender County, strengthening its position as an administrative and commercial center for the surrounding area.
Today, the town retains much of its historic character, with older buildings, traditional streetscapes, and landmarks that reflect its development as a railroad community.
Walking portions of the Osgood Canal Greenway near downtown provides an opportunity to appreciate that history while enjoying the outdoors.
π️ The Historic Burgaw Train Depot
One of Burgaw's most recognizable landmarks is the historic Burgaw Train Depot, widely recognized as one of North Carolina's oldest surviving railroad depots.
The depot represents an important chapter in the town's history, when railroad transportation was essential to local commerce and communication. Stations like this served as gathering places where passengers boarded trains, goods were shipped, and communities maintained connections with the wider region.
The building remains an important symbol of Burgaw's railroad heritage and contributes to the historic atmosphere of the downtown district.
Although the Osgood Canal Greenway is primarily a recreational trail, its connections to the surrounding community make it possible for visitors to combine a walk with an exploration of local landmarks such as the depot.
That combination of history and outdoor recreation is one of the things that makes the greenway different from a typical nature trail.
π️ Walking Through Historic Downtown Burgaw
Another appealing feature of the Osgood Canal Greenway and Urban Trail is its proximity to historic downtown Burgaw.
The town's downtown district features traditional architecture, local businesses, and streets that reflect its long history as a commercial and railroad community. Walking through these surroundings provides a different experience from the wooded sections of the greenway.
Instead of towering trees and canal scenery, visitors encounter storefronts, sidewalks, historic buildings, and the everyday activity of a small North Carolina town.
The transitions between these environments are part of what makes the trail interesting. A walk that begins in a quiet natural corridor can gradually become an exploration of Burgaw's historic streets and community spaces.
For travelers who enjoy discovering smaller towns, the greenway offers an enjoyable way to experience more of Burgaw than simply driving through its downtown.
π Hankins Park, Rotary Park, and Community Connections
The greenway connects several recreational spaces throughout Burgaw, including Hankins Park and Rotary Park. These community parks provide additional opportunities for outdoor activities and convenient amenities for people exploring the trail network.
Public restrooms and recreational facilities make the connected parks useful stopping points during longer walks. They also provide places for families and residents to spend time outdoors without having to travel to a separate destination.
The connections between parks are an important part of the greenway's design. Rather than creating isolated recreational spaces, Burgaw has developed a network that allows people to move between different areas of town.
This approach makes the trail valuable for both recreation and everyday transportation, encouraging walking and bicycling as convenient ways to reach community destinations.
π₯Ύ Hiking the Original 2.6-Mile Loop
The original Osgood Canal Greenway loop measures approximately 2.6 miles, making it a manageable distance for a casual hike or extended neighborhood walk.
Unlike mountain trails with steep climbs and rugged terrain, the route generally follows the relatively flat landscape of North Carolina's coastal plain. The combination of paved pathways, sidewalks, and neighborhood connections makes it suitable for visitors who prefer a more relaxed walking experience.
However, because the trail includes urban sections and road connections, hikers should remain aware of traffic, intersections, and other people using the route.
The changing scenery also makes the distance feel interesting. Instead of walking through the same type of environment for the entire route, visitors experience wooded areas, canal views, parks, and portions of Burgaw's community streets.
For Simba and me, it was an enjoyable way to explore the town while still spending time outdoors.
πΊ️ Burgaw's Expanding Four-Mile Greenway Network
Over the years, Burgaw has continued improving and expanding the Osgood Canal Greenway and Urban Trail as part of its efforts to create a more walkable community.
Portions of the original paved trail were completed around 2009–2011, establishing an important recreational corridor through central Burgaw.
The town subsequently pursued additional connections, improvements, and recreational amenities designed to make the network more useful for residents and visitors.
By 2026, the overall greenway system had expanded to approximately four miles, creating more opportunities for walking, jogging, bicycling, and exploring different parts of the community.
These improvements demonstrate how a relatively small town can invest in infrastructure that supports outdoor recreation while also making neighborhoods, schools, parks, and downtown destinations more accessible.
π New Greenway Improvements in 2026
One of the most significant recent developments occurred in 2026, when Burgaw completed another major expansion on the west side of town.
The project added sidewalks and improved pedestrian connections, helping extend the broader greenway network to approximately four miles. The improvements were designed to make walking and recreational access easier while connecting more areas of the community.
New recreational features included outdoor fitness equipment, children's climbing structures, and a turf sprint track at Rotary Park.
These additions expanded the range of activities available to residents and visitors. Instead of serving only as a walking route, the greenway system increasingly functions as a connected recreational network with opportunities for exercise, play, and community gatherings.
The improvements also reflect Burgaw's ongoing commitment to encouraging outdoor activity and creating public spaces that can be enjoyed by people of different ages.
π₯Ύ A Connection to North Carolina's Mountains-to-Sea Trail
One of the most interesting facts about the Osgood Canal Greenway is its connection to the Mountains-to-Sea Trail, one of North Carolina's most ambitious long-distance hiking routes.
The Mountains-to-Sea Trail stretches across the state, connecting the Great Smoky Mountains in western North Carolina with the Outer Banks along the Atlantic coast. The route passes through mountains, forests, rural communities, historic towns, and coastal landscapes.
Burgaw lies along Segment 14 of the trail, placing the community within a much larger network of outdoor exploration.
The Mountains-to-Sea Trail includes a combination of dedicated hiking paths, greenways, and road-walking sections, depending on the location and development of the route.
For hikers, this connection adds another layer of significance to Burgaw's local trail network. A relatively short community greenway becomes part of a statewide effort to connect North Carolina's diverse landscapes.
π Why Urban Greenways Are Important
The Osgood Canal Greenway is a good example of how towns can transform existing corridors into valuable public recreational spaces.
Greenways often follow waterways, former transportation routes, utility corridors, or other stretches of land that can connect neighborhoods and community destinations.
These routes provide places for people to walk, jog, bicycle, and enjoy the outdoors without necessarily traveling to a distant state park or nature preserve.
They can also help preserve green space within developed communities, offering habitat for wildlife and maintaining natural features that might otherwise receive little attention.
In Burgaw, the Osgood Canal corridor provides both recreational value and an opportunity to appreciate the natural landscape that runs through the heart of town.
π¦ Nature and Wildlife Along the Canal
Although the Osgood Canal Greenway passes through developed parts of Burgaw, its wooded sections and waterway corridor can still provide opportunities to observe nature.
Trees, shrubs, and vegetation along the canal create habitat for birds, insects, and other wildlife commonly found in southeastern North Carolina.
The mixture of water, vegetation, and open spaces can make greenways especially appealing for casual birdwatching and nature observation.
Wildlife sightings vary depending on the season, weather, and time of day, but visitors can often appreciate the sounds of birds and the movement of animals within the surrounding vegetation.
The greenway demonstrates that natural experiences aren't limited to remote forests or wilderness areas. Even a trail running through the center of a small town can offer opportunities to enjoy the outdoors.

Naturally, Simba joined me for our hike along the Osgood Canal Greenway and Urban Trail, adding another North Carolina destination to our growing collection of outdoor adventures.
What made this hike different from many of our previous trails was the combination of wooded scenery and small-town surroundings. Instead of spending the entire walk deep in a forest, we experienced sections of natural landscape connected by sidewalks, neighborhood streets, and community parks.
I enjoyed seeing how Burgaw incorporated the canal corridor into its recreational network. The trail provides an opportunity to appreciate nature while also discovering more of the town's character.
For Simba, it was another chance to accompany me on an outdoor adventure. For me, it was a reminder that enjoyable hikes don't always require traveling to a remote wilderness destination.
Sometimes a scenic greenway through a historic small town can be just as rewarding.

The wooded sections provide opportunities to capture tree-lined paths, canal views, and the peaceful atmosphere of the greenway. The paved pathways and surrounding vegetation create attractive perspectives as the trail winds through different areas of town.
The downtown portions offer an entirely different visual experience, with historic buildings, streets, and local landmarks reflecting Burgaw's railroad heritage.
