πΈπΏ The Gardens of Southeastern North Carolina – A Beautiful Botanical Hidden Gem in Willard, NC
Simba and I visited The Gardens of Southeastern North Carolina in Willard, North Carolina, a beautiful botanical destination filled with colorful flowers, ornamental plants, carefully landscaped garden beds, and peaceful natural surroundings! Located in rural Pender County, this remarkable property combines horticulture, education, conservation, and community recreation in a setting that continues to grow and evolve.
The Gardens is part of a property encompassing more than 300 acres, developed in collaboration with Johnson Nursery, an established wholesale plant grower that has operated in the area since 1981. What makes this destination especially interesting is the story behind its creation. Unlike botanical gardens established by universities, municipalities, or large foundations, The Gardens began as the personal vision of one man who spent his career cultivating plants and wanted to share their beauty with others.
That man is David Ritchie Johnson, founder and president of Johnson Nursery. After decades of growing and distributing plants throughout the horticultural industry, Johnson dreamed of creating a place where people could see those plants fully grown and incorporated into beautiful landscapes.
Today, that vision has become The Gardens of Southeastern North Carolina, a nonprofit botanical garden dedicated to inspiring visitors through nature, education, and outdoor experiences.
For Simba and me, it was another opportunity to discover a beautiful and somewhat unexpected destination hidden in the North Carolina countryside.
π± The Vision Behind The Gardens of Southeastern North Carolina
The story of The Gardens of Southeastern North Carolina begins with David Ritchie Johnson and his lifelong passion for plants.
Johnson grew up with an interest in horticulture and eventually pursued his education at North Carolina State University, studying horticultural science and nursery management. During his studies, he learned under J.C. Raulston, one of North Carolina's most influential horticulturists.
Raulston was known for introducing and evaluating ornamental plants and encouraging gardeners and nursery professionals to explore a wider variety of species. His influence continues today through the JC Raulston Arboretum in Raleigh, a respected botanical institution associated with North Carolina State University.
That educational background helped shape Johnson's career and his belief that plants should be appreciated not only as commercial products but also as important parts of beautiful, functional landscapes.
The Gardens represents an extension of that philosophy, transforming decades of horticultural knowledge into an experience that can be enjoyed by the public.
π³ Johnson Nursery – Growing Plants Since 1981
In 1981, David Johnson established Johnson Nursery on his family's property in Willard, North Carolina. What began as a nursery operation eventually developed into a significant wholesale plant-growing business serving customers throughout the horticultural industry.
Over the following decades, Johnson Nursery expanded its production and distribution capabilities, growing millions of plants for landscapers, garden centers, and other customers.
Wholesale nurseries play an important role in the landscaping industry, supplying the trees, shrubs, perennials, and ornamental plants used in residential gardens, commercial developments, parks, and public spaces.
However, Johnson recognized an interesting limitation of the nursery business. Although his operation produced enormous numbers of plants, many people involved in growing, selling, or purchasing them rarely had the opportunity to see those varieties fully mature in established landscapes.
He wanted to change that by creating a destination where visitors could experience how plants develop over time and how different varieties can be combined into attractive garden designs.
That idea eventually became the foundation for The Gardens of Southeastern North Carolina.
π· Turning a Lifelong Dream Into a Botanical Garden
The Gardens began taking shape as an organized nonprofit initiative in 2018, with federal tax-exempt recognition following in 2019.
The nonprofit structure reflected a broader mission than simply displaying plants. The organization was created to promote horticultural education, environmental appreciation, and community experiences while developing a botanical destination for southeastern North Carolina.
An important milestone came in 2020, when the first demonstration garden beds were dedicated. These early displays represented the beginning of Johnson's long-term vision to transform portions of the property into landscaped spaces where visitors could observe ornamental plants in mature settings.
By 2022, The Gardens had begun welcoming visitors and hosting community events, gradually becoming a destination for gardeners, families, horticulture enthusiasts, and people simply looking for a peaceful place to enjoy nature.
Rather than being completed all at once, the botanical garden has continued to evolve through additional landscaping, educational programs, events, and long-term development plans.
πΊ More Than 30 Beautifully Landscaped Display Beds
One of the most appealing features of The Gardens of Southeastern North Carolina is its collection of more than 30 carefully maintained display beds.
These landscaped areas showcase combinations of flowering annuals, perennials, shrubs, ornamental grasses, and other plants selected for their appearance and suitability to the region's growing conditions.
The displays provide opportunities to appreciate different colors, textures, heights, and growth patterns. Some plants are valued for their flowers, while others contribute interesting foliage, structural forms, or seasonal characteristics.
Rather than presenting every plant individually, the gardens demonstrate how different varieties can work together within a complete landscape design.
This approach makes the displays visually appealing while also providing practical inspiration for gardeners who want to create attractive outdoor spaces of their own.
For Simba and me, walking through the landscaped areas was a chance to enjoy the colors and natural beauty of a destination created through years of horticultural experience.
πΌ A Living Classroom for Gardeners and Plant Enthusiasts
Unlike botanical gardens focused exclusively on decorative landscaping, The Gardens of Southeastern North Carolina also serves an important educational purpose.
Its demonstration beds allow visitors to observe how different ornamental plants grow and perform in southeastern North Carolina's climate. This is particularly useful because plants that look impressive in nursery containers may develop very different appearances once established in a landscape.
By seeing mature specimens, gardeners and landscape professionals can better understand plant size, spacing, growth habits, seasonal changes, and how different varieties complement one another.
The displays also offer opportunities to compare plants suited to different landscaping needs, from flowering borders to shrubs, ornamental grasses, and other garden features.
For visitors without professional horticultural experience, the gardens provide an accessible introduction to the creativity and planning involved in landscape design.
It's a place where beautiful scenery and practical learning naturally come together.
π A Proven Winners Signature Garden
One of the organization's most significant achievements came in 2024, when The Gardens of Southeastern North Carolina was recognized as a Proven Winners Signature Garden.
Proven Winners is a widely recognized horticultural brand associated with ornamental plant varieties, gardening resources, and landscape inspiration.
The Signature Garden designation connected the Willard destination with a network of demonstration gardens that showcase ornamental plants and creative landscape designs.
For The Gardens, the recognition represented an important milestone in its development as a horticultural destination. It also highlighted the value of creating spaces where visitors can observe plants growing in real-world landscapes rather than simply viewing them in containers or catalogs.
The distinction reinforced the educational and demonstration-focused mission that inspired David Johnson to establish the gardens in the first place.
π» Seasonal Flowers and Changing Garden Displays
One of the wonderful things about botanical gardens is that their appearance changes throughout the year. The Gardens of Southeastern North Carolina is no exception, with seasonal vegetation creating different colors, textures, and visual experiences.
Spring often brings renewed growth and flowering plants, while summer landscapes can feature lush foliage and vibrant seasonal displays. Autumn introduces different colors and textures as plants respond to changing temperatures and daylight.
Even during quieter growing periods, ornamental grasses, shrubs, and other structural plants can contribute interesting shapes and patterns to the landscape.
Because the gardens include a variety of plant types, visitors may discover something different depending on when they visit.
That seasonal variety also makes the destination appealing for repeat visits, allowing gardeners and nature enthusiasts to observe how established landscapes change over time.
π³ More Than 300 Acres of Natural Possibilities
Although the landscaped display beds are among the most recognizable features, The Gardens is associated with a property encompassing more than 300 acres.
This expansive setting provides opportunities for the organization to develop additional recreational and educational experiences while preserving portions of the surrounding natural landscape.
David Johnson's long-term vision extends beyond ornamental garden beds to include nature trails, native hardwood forests, creekside scenery, water features, and spaces where visitors can experience the region's natural environment.
These plans reflect an interest in connecting designed landscapes with the broader ecosystems of southeastern North Carolina.
The distinction is important: while formal garden beds demonstrate horticultural creativity, natural areas offer opportunities to appreciate native habitats and the ecological processes that support them.
Together, these environments could make The Gardens an increasingly diverse destination as development continues.
π¦ Nature, Conservation, and Environmental Appreciation
The Gardens' mission includes encouraging visitors to develop a greater appreciation for plants and the natural world.
Southeastern North Carolina supports a wide variety of native plant communities, influenced by its coastal plain geography, climate, soils, and waterways.
Preserving natural landscapes and creating educational garden spaces can help visitors better understand the importance of vegetation, pollinators, wildlife habitats, and responsible landscape practices.
Gardens can also demonstrate how thoughtful plant selection contributes to attractive outdoor spaces while supporting broader environmental goals.
For people who spend much of their time in developed areas, visiting a botanical garden provides an opportunity to reconnect with the natural environment and observe details that might otherwise go unnoticed.
That connection between horticulture and environmental appreciation is an important part of what makes The Gardens more than simply a collection of attractive flowers.
π Fall Festivals and Family-Friendly Activities
In addition to its landscaped displays, The Gardens of Southeastern North Carolina hosts seasonal celebrations and community events.
Its fall festivities have featured activities such as pumpkin picking, wagon rides, food vendors, and family-friendly entertainment, creating opportunities for visitors to enjoy the property in a different way.
Seasonal events introduce the gardens to people who might not otherwise visit a botanical destination. Families can enjoy outdoor activities while discovering the surrounding landscape and learning more about the organization.
These celebrations also help establish The Gardens as a community gathering place rather than a destination reserved exclusively for serious gardeners or horticultural professionals.
Because activities and schedules can vary from year to year, visitors should check the organization's current event calendar before planning a trip around a particular festival.
✨ Southern Lights – A Holiday Garden Experience
During the holiday season, the property has also hosted Southern Lights, a festive illuminated garden experience that transforms portions of the grounds into a colorful nighttime attraction.
Holiday light displays provide a completely different perspective on a botanical garden. Instead of relying primarily on flowers and foliage, the landscape becomes a setting for decorative lighting and seasonal entertainment.
Events like Southern Lights allow visitors to experience the gardens outside the traditional growing season while creating opportunities for families and friends to celebrate together.
The event also demonstrates how the property can serve multiple purposes throughout the year, combining horticultural displays with seasonal community experiences.
Visitors interested in attending should confirm current dates, admission arrangements, and event details through the organization's official information.
πΏ Gardening Workshops and Educational Programs
Education is central to the mission of The Gardens of Southeastern North Carolina, and the organization has offered gardening workshops, educational activities, and other opportunities for visitors to learn about horticulture.
These programs can help participants develop practical knowledge about plant selection, landscape design, seasonal gardening, and the care of ornamental plants.
The connection with Johnson Nursery gives the gardens a particularly interesting educational foundation. Decades of professional growing experience provide valuable context for demonstrating how plants perform in established landscapes.
For homeowners and gardening enthusiasts, learning from real garden examples can be especially helpful. Seeing how plants grow together and change over time often provides inspiration that photographs or nursery labels cannot fully communicate.
The Gardens offers a setting where horticultural knowledge can be shared in an inviting outdoor environment.
πΎ A Botanical Hidden Gem in Rural Pender County
One of the things that makes The Gardens of Southeastern North Carolina particularly interesting is its location in Willard, a small rural community in Pender County.
When people think of botanical gardens, they often imagine large institutions in major cities or university campuses. Finding an ambitious horticultural destination surrounded by the countryside of southeastern North Carolina is a pleasant surprise.
The rural setting gives the gardens a peaceful atmosphere, away from the traffic and development associated with larger metropolitan areas.
It also reflects the agricultural and horticultural traditions of the surrounding region, where farming, plant production, and land-based industries have long played important roles.
For travelers exploring lesser-known destinations, The Gardens offers a chance to discover something beautiful in a place that might otherwise be overlooked.
π Exploring The Gardens With Simba
Naturally, Simba joined me for our visit to The Gardens of Southeastern North Carolina, adding another beautiful destination to our travels.
Unlike the wooded nature trails, historic landmarks, and unusual roadside sculptures we've explored, this stop focused on the beauty of cultivated landscapes and the creativity involved in designing gardens.
I enjoyed seeing the colorful plant displays, ornamental vegetation, and carefully arranged garden beds. Knowing that the property developed from David Johnson's lifelong passion for horticulture made the experience even more interesting.
For Simba, it was another opportunity to explore a new North Carolina destination with me. For me, it was a chance to appreciate the work that goes into transforming an ordinary landscape into an inspiring botanical setting.
As with any botanical property, visitors traveling with pets should confirm current pet-access rules and respect areas where animals may be restricted.
πΈ Photographing Colorful Flowers and Landscaped Gardens
The Gardens of Southeastern North Carolina offers beautiful opportunities for photography, particularly for visitors who enjoy flowers, ornamental plants, and carefully designed landscapes.
The display beds provide opportunities to capture colorful blooms, interesting foliage, ornamental grasses, and combinations of plants arranged for visual impact.
Close-up photographs can highlight the details of individual flowers and leaves, while wider views reveal how different varieties contribute to the overall garden design.
The surrounding rural landscape also provides a peaceful backdrop, helping distinguish The Gardens from botanical attractions located in heavily developed urban areas.
For my video, I wanted to capture the beauty of the landscaped beds and the natural atmosphere of the property while showing Simba enjoying another unusual North Carolina destination with me.
π Improving Lives by Cultivating Inspiration
The guiding mission of The Gardens of Southeastern North Carolina is expressed through the phrase "Improving Lives by Cultivating Inspiration."
That mission reflects the belief that experiencing plants and nature can encourage creativity, relaxation, education, and a greater appreciation for the outdoors.
Gardens have long served as places where people can slow down, enjoy beautiful surroundings, and find inspiration for their own homes and landscapes. They also provide opportunities to learn about the natural world and the relationships between plants, people, and the environment.
For David Johnson, the vision was about more than creating attractive displays. It was about sharing the results of a lifetime spent working with plants and helping others experience the beauty of mature landscapes.
The Gardens continues to develop around that idea, combining horticultural expertise with public education and community experiences.
π Why The Gardens Is an Important Community Resource
The development of The Gardens of Southeastern North Carolina demonstrates how a personal passion can evolve into something that benefits an entire community.
By creating a nonprofit botanical destination alongside an established wholesale nursery, David Johnson helped establish a place where visitors can learn about plants, appreciate landscape design, and enjoy seasonal activities.
The Gardens also creates opportunities for horticultural education, family events, and environmental appreciation in a rural area where attractions of this kind may be less common.
As the property continues to develop, its combination of landscaped displays and potential natural recreation areas could provide even more ways for people to connect with the outdoors.
It's an inspiring example of how decades of professional experience and a clear personal vision can create something with lasting value.
πΎ Another Beautiful North Carolina Adventure With Simba
For Simba and me, visiting The Gardens of Southeastern North Carolina in Willard was another rewarding experience exploring the lesser-known attractions of the state.
What impressed me most was the story behind the gardens. David Johnson spent decades building a successful wholesale nursery, but he also recognized that plants could inspire people in ways that went beyond their commercial value.
His dream of creating a place where visitors could see mature plants incorporated into beautiful landscapes eventually became a nonprofit botanical destination featuring more than 30 display beds, educational opportunities, and community events.
The Gardens is still evolving, which makes its story particularly interesting. What visitors experience today represents years of work, but the long-term vision includes even more opportunities to explore horticulture and the natural environment.
The Gardens of Southeastern North Carolina is a wonderful example of how one person's passion for plants can grow into something that benefits an entire community.
