πΌπ Round Island Lighthouse – A Story of Survival on the Gulf Coast
Simba and I visited the Round Island Lighthouse in Pascagoula, Mississippi — a historic Gulf Coast landmark with an incredible story of survival and restoration.
Standing along the waterfront today, it’s more than just a lighthouse — it’s a symbol of preservation and resilience.
π°️ From Round Island to the Mainland
Originally built in 1859 on Round Island in the Mississippi Sound, the lighthouse served as a guide for ships navigating the coastal waters for over a century.
Through the years, it endured:
- Harsh coastal weather
- Repeated hurricane damage
- Erosion and changing conditions
- Long-term exposure to the elements
Eventually, the structure was heavily damaged and at risk of being lost.
π ️ A Remarkable Restoration
Instead of letting history disappear, efforts were made to save the lighthouse.
The structure was carefully relocated to Pascagoula and restored, giving it a new life while preserving its original character.
That effort turned it into something even more meaningful:
- A preserved piece of maritime history
- A symbol of community dedication
- A second chance for a historic landmark
- A connection between past and present
π A Scenic Waterfront Setting
Today, the lighthouse stands along the waterfront, where visitors can enjoy both its history and the surrounding coastal views.
Walking around with Simba, the setting added to the experience:
- Open water views along the Gulf Coast
- A peaceful atmosphere by the shoreline
- A historic structure set against the sky
- A perfect blend of nature and history
