ππ The Lady in the Lake – Alabama’s Giant Floating Mystery
Simba and I visited The Lady in the Lake, often called The Lady in the Bay, in Elberta, Alabama — one of the strangest and most unforgettable roadside attractions along the Gulf Coast.
The moment you see it, you can’t help but stare.
π A Giant Woman Floating in the Water
Located at Barber Marina near Bayou La Launch, the sculpture depicts a massive woman appearing to relax in the bay like it’s a giant bathtub.
Only parts of her are visible above the water:
- Her enormous head
- Her bent knees rising from the surface
- The illusion that the rest of her body is underwater
The floating effect makes the entire scene feel surreal — especially when you first spot it from a distance.
π¨ Created by Roadside Artist Mark Cline
The sculpture was created by Mark Cline, the same artist behind nearby roadside attractions like Bamahenge.
Together, these attractions have turned the marina area into a bizarre and entertaining roadside wonderland filled with oversized art and hidden surprises.
π΄ Weird, Whimsical, and Totally Memorable
What makes The Lady in the Lake so fun is how unexpected it is.
One moment you’re driving along the Gulf Coast… the next you’re looking at a giant fiberglass woman floating in the bay.
Exploring with Simba, it felt like the perfect example of why roadside attractions are so entertaining:
- Completely unexpected
- Impossible to ignore
- Funny, weird, and oddly impressive
- A guaranteed conversation starter
πΈ One of the Gulf Coast’s Best Photo Stops
The marina setting adds even more character to the attraction, with boats, water views, and coastal scenery surrounding the sculpture.
It’s one of those places where every angle gives you another great photo opportunity.
