🪨🌵 Exploring Giant Rock - Landers’ Enigmatic Desert Monolith

Simba the Adventure Pup 🐾 and I headed deep into the Mojave to visit Giant Rock in Landers, California — one of the largest freestanding boulders in the world and a place wrapped in layers of history, mysticism, and UFO lore. Rising more than seven stories above the desert floor, this enormous granite formation has been a landmark for Indigenous peoples, homesteaders, spiritual seekers, and later, UFO enthusiasts drawn to its strange energy and legendary past. 🌄🛸

The drive into the high desert is wide-open and rugged, leading to a surreal landscape where Giant Rock sits completely alone on the sand — a monolith against the sky. Its sheer size is jaw-dropping, and its history is even more fascinating. In the early 20th century, eccentric prospector Frank Critzer carved out an underground room beneath the rock, living literally inside it before a tragic explosion sealed his story into local lore. Today, the rock’s massive split adds even more depth to its mythic presence.
