๐ŸŠ๐ŸŒฟ Visiting the First Washington Navel Orange Tree - Riverside’s Historic Citrus Icon

Simba the Adventure Pup ๐Ÿพ and I visited the First Washington Navel Orange Tree in Riverside, California — one of the most historically important trees in the entire state. Planted in the 1870s, this single tree became the spark that ignited Southern California’s booming citrus industry, transforming the region’s economy, agriculture, and identity for generations. ๐ŸŒž๐ŸŠ

Today, the original parent navel tree still stands — alive, protected, and lovingly preserved behind fencing. Seeing it in person is surprisingly powerful. Something so modest played a monumental role in shaping an entire era of California history. The landscaped setting and nearby historic markers add a quiet, reflective atmosphere to the site.

๐ŸŒ„ Why This Tree Matters

In the late 1800s, the import of two navel orange trees from Brazil changed everything for Southern California. The climate was perfect, the fruit was seedless and delicious, and the citrus industry exploded — shaping communities, drawing settlers, and building an agricultural empire.

Of the original two parent trees, only one survives today. Standing before it feels like visiting the root (literally!) of an entire chapter of California’s story.

For anyone interested in agricultural history, hidden historic stops, or unique California landmarks, this site is a quiet but profound reminder of how something small can create massive change.
