π² The Discovery Tree – Arnold, California
Simba πΎ and I visited the historic site of the Giant Sequoia known as the Discovery Tree in Arnold, California, a landmark that helped spark early awareness of America’s natural wonders. Once measuring over 280 feet tall and 25 feet in diameter, this ancient giant stood in what is now Calaveras Big Trees State Park — the first grove of giant sequoias ever documented by Europeans.
In 1853, the Discovery Tree was tragically felled so its massive trunk could be displayed in exhibitions around the country. The stump that remains today serves as both a reminder of exploitation and a symbol of the conservation movement that would follow.

πΏ Why It’s Worth Visiting
If you love tree history, forest giants, or California landmarks with meaning, this stop is essential. Walking among these ancient giants brings both humility and perspective — a connection to nature’s past and a call to preserve it for the future.
