⚓π Exploring the Wreck of the Mary D. Hume – Gold Beach, Oregon
Simba πΎ and I explored the hauntingly beautiful Wreck of the Mary D. Hume in Gold Beach, Oregon — a fascinating piece of maritime history now resting peacefully along the Rogue River. π
Built in 1881, the Mary D. Hume served for nearly a century — first as a whaling ship, then a freighter, and finally a tugboat. After almost 100 years at sea, she was retired in her hometown of Gold Beach. Today, her remains sit partially submerged, covered in moss, barnacles, and sea grass — a striking and nostalgic reminder of Oregon’s coastal legacy.

π A Century at Sea
The Mary D. Hume isn’t just a wreck — she’s a storyteller. From Alaskan whaling expeditions to freight runs along the West Coast, this vessel endured it all. When she finally returned home, her story didn’t end — it became part of Oregon’s history.
Now resting quietly in the harbor, she’s weathered by time and tide but still stands as a symbol of resilience, legacy, and the spirit of the sea.
