Exploring the Giant Hull Picnic Table in Corvallis, Oregon 🌲🍽️

Simba 🐾 and I made a stop at Avery Park in Corvallis, Oregon, home to one of the most fascinating and massive picnic tables you’ll ever see—the Hull Picnic Table! This incredible structure isn’t just an oversized spot for lunch; it’s a historic relic from Oregon’s rich timber era and one of the longest single-slab picnic tables in existence.

πŸ“ Historic Highlights from Our Visit

πŸͺ΅ The giant picnic table is one of six slabs milled by the Hull-Oakes Lumber Company in the 1980s.
🌲 The table was carved from a single old-growth Douglas fir, measuring roughly 85 feet, 10 inches long.
🏞️ It’s installed under the Lions Shelter at Avery Park, offering both history and shade for visitors.
πŸͺš Other tables from the same project can be found at Bellfountain Park and the Benton County Fairgrounds, each cut from the same legendary tree.
πŸ‘·‍♂️ The project was spearheaded by Ralph Hull, who aimed to celebrate Oregon’s timber craftsmanship and community spirit.

A Piece of Oregon’s Logging Legacy

Standing beside this enormous table feels like stepping into Oregon’s industrial past. The smooth slab, carved from a tree that once towered in an old-growth forest, tells a story of craftsmanship, engineering, and pride in the state’s logging heritage. It’s amazing to imagine the teamwork, tools, and precision that went into cutting, transporting, and assembling such a piece.

Perfect Stop for History Lovers & Road-Trippers

Avery Park is a peaceful, dog-friendly place where you can take a break from your travels. Simba enjoyed sniffing around the trails while I marveled at the sheer size of this handmade marvel. Whether you’re into logging history, timber engineering, or just love spotting unique roadside relics, the Hull Picnic Table is worth a visit.
