🐮🌊 Captain Courageous Memorial – Klamath, California

Simba the Adventure Pup 🐾 and I visited the Captain Courageous Memorial in Klamath, California — a quirky roadside tribute to an unlikely local hero: an Angus-Jersey bull once known as Bahamas.

During the devastating 1964 Christmas Flood, this 800-pound steer was swept from his pasture and carried out to sea. Against all odds, he survived by clinging to storm debris and was later spotted among log rafts in Crescent City Harbor. Rescuers brought him safely back to shore, and locals affectionately renamed him Captain Courageous — a living symbol of strength and survival for a town that had endured unimaginable loss.

📜 A Legend of the Redwood Coast

After his dramatic rescue, Captain Courageous became a beloved mascot for Klamath, embodying the town’s resilience and determination to rebuild. He lived a long, peaceful life until 1983, and in 1997, the E Clampus Vitus Eureka Chapter 101 placed a memorial plaque to honor his “courage, stamina, and indomitable spirit.

📍 Finding the Memorial

You’ll find the Captain Courageous Memorial along Klamath Blvd near US-101 (Exit 769) — mounted on a large boulder with a bronze plaque. Keep an eye out for the gold-painted bear statues mentioned in local guides; they mark you’re in the right place. 🐻

It’s a quick and fascinating roadside stop that perfectly blends history, humor, and heart — a reminder that heroes come in all forms, even with hooves. 🐂✨
