💦🐾 Visiting Blackwater Falls with Simba the Adventure Pup - West Virginia’s Most Iconic Waterfall 🌲📸

Hey trail fam! Ash here — and this week, Simba and I took a break from rugged hikes and scrambles to soak in one of West Virginia’s most iconic natural wonders: the breathtaking Blackwater Falls in Blackwater Falls State Park, located in Tucker County, WV. 🌄🐶

With its amber-hued cascade plunging 57 feet into the Blackwater Canyon, this is hands-down one of the most photographed locations in the entire state — and now we know why!

🥾 A Short Walk with a Big Reward

We started from the main parking area near the Trading Post, where signs clearly point you toward the Blackwater Falls Boardwalk Trail. This short, well-maintained boardwalk takes you down a series of stairs and platforms, gradually leading to several fantastic viewpoints of the falls.

Along the way, the sound of rushing water builds, and Simba’s tail was going full helicopter mode before we even saw the falls. 😄

💧 About the Falls

Blackwater Falls gets its rich amber tint from the tannins of fallen hemlock and red spruce needles — giving it a moody, magical look that’s totally unique compared to other Appalachian waterfalls.

Once we reached the lower platform, we took our time watching the water thunder into the gorge below, mist swirling in the air, and the sun catching just enough of the canyon to create a glow. ✨

Note: Leashes are required in the park, and it’s a good idea to bring water and snacks for your pup (plus a biscuit or two for those post-fall photo ops).

• Stop by the Trading Post or lodge area for souvenirs, snacks, or to learn more about the park
• Pair this visit with a hike to Elakala Falls or a drive to Lindy Point Overlook for a full day of scenic views
