πŸͺ¨πŸΎ Hiking to Three Caves with Simba the Adventure Pup! Monte Sano Preserve – Huntsville, AL 🌳

Hey trail friends! Ash here — and Simba the Adventure Pup and I are back on the trail, this time exploring one of the coolest hidden gems in North Alabama: the Three Caves via the Alms House Trail in the beautiful Monte Sano Preserve near Huntsville! πŸ•πŸŒ²πŸͺ¨

This hike was packed with shady forest paths, peaceful vibes, and one seriously epic surprise — a massive limestone quarry that looks like something out of a movie. πŸŽ¬πŸ‘€

πŸ“ Trail Details

Location: Monte Sano Preserve – Huntsville, AL
Trail: Alms House Trail to Three Caves
Distance: ~2.5 miles round trip
Difficulty: Easy to moderate (some roots and rocks)
Dog-Friendly: Yes! Simba gave it two muddy paws up 🐾🐾
Highlight: Three Caves overlook + Land Trust beauty

🌳 The Hike to the Caves

We started off on the Alms House Trail, which winds gently through tall trees, soft forest floor, and just enough incline to feel like a hike without overdoing it. There’s lots of shade, lots of birdsong, and plenty of space to roam without crowds. πŸ¦πŸƒ

Simba was living his best trail life — trotting up ahead, tail wagging, nose to the ground, finding all the good smells. πŸ‘ƒπŸΆ

πŸͺ¨ Arriving at Three Caves

And then — boom — the forest opens up and suddenly you’re looking down into this jaw-dropping quarry. Known as Three Caves, it was once a limestone mine and is now part of the Land Trust of North Alabama.

While you can’t go inside the caves themselves (they’re gated for safety), the overlook and surrounding views are more than enough to make the trip worth it. It’s quiet, unexpected, and super photogenic. πŸ“Έ

Pro tip: Bring snacks and hang out at the overlook — it’s the perfect rest stop.

🐢 Dog-Friendly Notes

✔️ Leash required (Land Trust rules)
✔️ Bring water — there’s no creek access on this loop
✔️ Lots of squirrels and birds = plenty of trail excitement 🐿️
✔️ Shaded and cool, even in warmer weather

Simba absolutely loved the soft trail, cool temps, and breezy views at the overlook!
