Georgia’s Little Grand Canyon: Hiking Providence Canyon with Simba the Adventure Pup ๐พ๐️
Hey everyone! Ash here from Life on Paws and Wheels, and today we’re sharing one of our most visually stunning adventures yet — hiking the Canyon Loop Trail and Canyon Floor at Providence Canyon State Park in Lumpkin, Georgia.
Also known as “Georgia’s Little Grand Canyon,” this place is nothing short of magical. Picture massive, colorful canyon walls, sandy paths winding through narrow slots, and towering formations that make you feel like you’ve been transported out West — all while still in the Southeast.
And yes, it’s totally dog-friendly — Simba was in his happy place the entire hike!
Trail Hiked: Canyon Loop Trail + Canyon Floor
Distance: ~3 miles total
Difficulty: Easy to moderate (some elevation & sandy footing)
Dog-Friendly: 100%! Simba explored on-leash with plenty of tail wags
You’ll find:
• Towering walls of red, orange, pink, and white clay
• Surreal, almost otherworldly formations
• Wide canyon floors with soft, sandy trails
• Narrow slot canyons you can walk through!
Highlights:
• Simba's favorite moment: Splashing through shallow water in the canyon floor
• My favorite moment: Looking up from the bottom and seeing multicolored layers stacked like a painted wall
• Tip: Wear shoes you don’t mind getting muddy — the floor can be wet, sandy, or slick depending on recent weather!
• Bring extra water — there’s not much shade once you’re in the canyon
• Avoid the hottest part of the day if possible
• Great for medium-energy dogs — Simba handled it like a champ!
We came in for a day trip and had no issue finding space, even with the RV. Just arrive early if you're visiting on a weekend — it’s a popular spot for good reason!
In our latest video, we take you along the canyon loop and floor, share breathtaking views, and show you what it’s like exploring this one-of-a-kind Georgia gem with a dog in tow.
