ππΎ Exploring the Abandoned Glady Tunnel with Simba the Adventure Pup - Randolph County, WV π²π»
Hey explorers! Ash here — and this week, Simba and I veered off the usual scenic trail path and wandered into something a little... spookier. π
Welcome to the Glady Tunnel — a forgotten piece of West Virginia railroad history hidden deep in the woods of Randolph County. Overgrown, silent, and seriously atmospheric, this abandoned tunnel has all the right ingredients for an off-the-beaten-path adventure (and maybe a jump scare or two). π π
π Glady Tunnel Quick Facts
Location: Randolph County, WVTrail Type: Forest path to tunnel entrance
Distance: Approx. 1–1.5 miles round trip
Dog-Friendly: Yes — Simba explored right alongside me πΎ
Highlights: Abandoned tunnel, railroad history, forest walk
Warning: Tunnel is abandoned and unstable — do NOT enter
π₯Ύ Trail Experience: Forest + Forgotten Tracks
We started on a peaceful forest trail — soft ground, birdsong, and that distinct hush that comes when you know something unusual is ahead. Simba trotted along happily, ears alert, tail wagging low like he knew this wasn’t your average hiking destination.
As we approached the tunnel, the woods got quieter… the air cooler… and suddenly, there it was: the massive stone-framed mouth of the Glady Tunnel, half-swallowed by vines and moss.
π» The Tunnel: Haunting and Historic
Built for rail traffic back in the early 1900s, Glady Tunnel once connected timber and mining operations to the outside world. Now? It’s an eerily still stone-and-darkness monument to an era long gone.
We didn’t go inside — for safety AND sanity reasons:
• Simba took two steps forward, sniffed the air, and gave me a clear “nah, we’re good” look• I took the hint π
But we did spend time photographing the stonework, filming the entrance, and soaking in the we’re-being-watched energy.
πΆ Simba’s Spooky Trail Report
✔️ Loved: Forest walk, crunchy leaves, sniffable old rail ties
✔️ Skipped: Entering the actual tunnel π»
✔️ Ghost rating: πΎπΎπΎ “Cool to look at, let’s not linger too long”
Pro tip: Bring a flashlight if you're curious — but we don’t recommend exploring inside due to unstable conditions and zero visibility.
π RV Tips + Visiting Notes
• No formal parking lot — we pulled off on a wide gravel shoulder nearby (scout ahead with a smaller vehicle)• No signage — this is a DIY adventure, best for experienced trail wanderers
• Combine with other nearby hikes or ghost towns for a full WV mystery day
• Best visited in daylight — for obvious reasons π

✨ Final Thoughts
The Glady Tunnel may not be on any official trail map, but it’s a fascinating window into Appalachian railroad history — and one of the spookier, stranger stops on our RV travels so far.
Whether you’re into lost places, haunted energy, or just love a good golden retriever reaction to the unknown, this is one hike you won’t forget.
Until next time — happy trails, weird finds, and no thanks, we’re not going in there,
