Summiting Brasstown Bald via Jack’s Gap Trail with Simba the Adventure Pup!

Hey friends! Ash here from Life on Paws and Wheels, and today Simba (my golden retriever and trail buddy) and I are excited to share one of our most epic hikes yet: climbing to the top of Brasstown Bald — the highest point in Georgia!

We tackled this summit via the Jack’s Gap Trail — a challenging but rewarding 6-mile roundtrip climb that delivers jaw-dropping 360° panoramic views across four states. If you’re a hiker, nature lover, or adventurer with your pup, this one belongs at the top of your Georgia bucket list.

🗺️ About the Trail

The Jack’s Gap Trail is a moderate-to-strenuous out-and-back hike that steadily ascends to the summit of Brasstown Bald (4,784 feet). Along the way, you’ll pass through beautiful hardwood forests, climb rocky switchbacks, and emerge at the observation tower where sweeping views of Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee await.

The summit area has a visitor center, restrooms, and plenty of space to soak in the scenery. On clear days, you can see for miles — it’s truly one of the best vantage points in the entire Blue Ridge Mountains.

🐾 Hiking with Simba: Dog-Friendly Highlights

✔️ Leashed + dog-friendly — Simba crushed the steady climb and loved the cool mountain breezes at the summit.
✔️ Shady forest cover — much of the trail is under trees, which keeps things cool and comfortable.
✔️ Water + snack breaks — we made sure to pause along the way and refuel, especially on the steeper sections.
✔️ Summit excitement — Simba was all smiles at the top, posing proudly next to the summit marker!

🧭 Tips for Hiking Brasstown Bald

🥾 Be ready for the climb — this trail has a steady uphill grade, so pace yourself.
💧 Bring lots of water — for both you and your pup, especially on warmer days.
🍎 Pack snacks or lunch — the summit is a perfect picnic spot!
🕗 Start early — the summit can get busy, especially on weekends.
📸 Don’t forget your camera — the 360° views are unforgettable.
🐕 Mind the paws — rocky sections can be rough on sensitive paws, so take breaks and watch footing.

🚐 RV Traveler Tips

RV travelers: while you can’t park your rig at the Jack’s Gap trailhead (limited space), there are several nearby campgrounds and RV parks that make a perfect home base. We stayed nearby and made this a day hike — definitely a highlight of our Georgia adventure!
