Muddy Miles & Swampy Smiles: Hiking Black Bear Wilderness Trail with Simba the Adventure Pup!
Hey friends! Ash here from Life on Paws and Wheels, and today Simba and I are taking you into the wild wetlands of Florida for one of our most rugged and unique hikes yet — the Black Bear Wilderness Area Trail in Seminole County!
This one’s for the adventurers — the folks who don’t mind a little mud, love spotting wildlife, and want to experience Florida beyond the beaches. Spoiler: Simba had an absolute blast. πΎπΏ
What makes this hike special?
✔️ Elevated boardwalks through swamp areas
✔️ True Florida backcountry vibes
✔️ Tons of wildlife — birds, alligators, snakes (be aware!), and yes, even occasional black bear sightings
✔️ A mix of dry forest trail + wet, muddy patches that’ll challenge your footing and your gear
This trail is popular with locals but still feels wild and remote — a true gem for anyone seeking an off-the-beaten-path experience in Central Florida.
✔️ Cooling opportunities — there are spots to splash, but we were careful near the swampy areas (alligators are a thing!).
✔️ Sniff overload — from mossy logs to murky water, Simba’s nose was working overtime.
✔️ Tiring but fun — by the end, he was muddy, happy, and ready for a nap in the RV.
Tip: This trail is best for dogs who enjoy rougher terrain and don’t mind getting a little (or a lot) dirty!
π Bring a towel + dog wipes — you’ll need them post-hike.
π§ Pack plenty of water — for you and your pup.
π Stay aware of wildlife — alligators, snakes, and even bears live here. Keep your dog leashed and alert.
π Start early — the heat and humidity pick up fast, even in cooler months.
πΈ Don’t miss the river overlooks — peaceful spots for a break and a few photos.
If you’re road-tripping through Florida and want a break from the usual tourist stops, this trail offers a true wilderness escape just outside the city.
In our latest video, Simba and I take you through the full loop — boardwalks, mud pits, forest paths, and wildlife sightings. It's messy, wild, and 100% Florida.
