Lakeside Serenity: Walking the Piney-Z Lake Loop with Simba 🐾🌳🌊
Hey trail friends! Ash here from Life on Paws and Wheels, and this week, Simba the Adventure Pup and I took a peaceful walk around one of Tallahassee’s best-kept nature secrets — the Piney-Z Lake Loop at Lafayette Heritage Trail Park.
If you’re RVing through North Florida or just need a quiet place to walk, breathe, and reconnect with nature, this trail delivers a refreshing mix of lake views, wildlife, and dog-friendly paths in a beautifully shaded setting.
Trail: Piney-Z Lake Loop
Distance: ~2.5 miles (loop)
Difficulty: Easy
Terrain: Crushed gravel, boardwalks, shaded dirt paths
Dog-Friendly: Absolutely — Simba gave it two muddy paws up!
✔️ Peaceful lakefront views from almost every angle
✔️ Wildlife galore — we spotted turtles, herons, and butterflies
✔️ Shady trails with wide paths for relaxed walking
✔️ Boardwalks and bridges that cross scenic wetland areas
✔️ Minimal crowds, even on a sunny weekend
It’s the kind of place where you slow down, take a deep breath, and let your pup sniff every fern and tree stump in sight.
🐾 Cool breezes off the lake kept him comfy
👃 So many good smells in the pine forest and marsh areas
🐦 He perked up at every bird call (though we kept a respectful distance!)
🌤️ Plenty of shady spots for breaks and belly rubs
There were a few muddy spots after recent rain, but Simba considers that a bonus.
💧 Bring water — there are a few benches but no dog fountains
☀️ Mornings or late afternoons are ideal to avoid the heat
🦟 Bug spray is a good idea if it’s been rainy

🚐 RV Travel Tip
Lafayette Heritage Trail Park has plenty of regular parking, but not for large rigs. If you're in an RV, plan to stay at a nearby campground and drive your toad (towed vehicle) into town. We were camped about 15 minutes away and found the trail easily accessible for a day trip.🎥 Watch Our Walk
