Discovering Florida’s Hidden Caves: Exploring Dames Caves with Simba the Adventure Pup πΎπ³️πΏ
Hey explorers! Ash here from Life on Paws and Wheels, and this week Simba and I took a detour from the beaches and boardwalks to explore something truly unexpected — natural caves in the middle of Florida!
Welcome to Dames Caves in Hernando County, a short but unforgettable trail that leads to limestone sinkholes and open cave formations, right in the heart of a quiet forest. It’s one of the coolest “off-the-map” stops we’ve made in Central Florida — and yes, it’s dog-friendly and RV-travel approved.
π€️ Distance: ~1 mile out and back
π₯Ύ Difficulty: Easy to moderate
π² Terrain: Sandy, rooty, and rocky in some areas
π Dog-Friendly: Absolutely — just keep your pup leashed and safe around the cave edges
✔️ Climbing rocks like a champ — carefully, of course!
✔️ Quiet trail with minimal traffic — ideal for calm exploration
✔️ Cooler temperatures under the trees and near the caves
Simba was cautious but curious — and watching him explore something totally different from our usual hikes was a joy.
• Open sinkholes and natural limestone formations
• A series of shallow, exposed caves you can look into (and carefully step into, if safe!)
• Rugged, forested surroundings that feel worlds away from typical Florida terrain
• Peaceful seclusion — no crowds, no pavement, just nature doing its thing
It’s not a long hike, but it’s full of surprises.
π Wear sturdy shoes — parts of the trail are uneven and rocky
π§ Bring water — no amenities here, so come prepared
π΅ No service — download maps ahead of time and tell someone your plans
π️ Pack it in, pack it out — there are no trash cans or restrooms
In our latest video, we walk the trail, explore the caves up close, and show you why this little-known natural wonder deserves a spot on your Florida adventure list — especially if you're exploring with your pup.
