A Peaceful Walk on the Florida Trail: Lockwood Blvd to Barr Street with Simba the Adventure Pup!

Hey friends! Ash here from Life on Paws and Wheels, and today Simba and I are slowing things down a bit for a peaceful, forest-filled hike along a scenic stretch of the Florida Trail in Seminole County.

We hiked the section between Lockwood Blvd and Barr Street, a mellow and dog-friendly out-and-back that follows the Little Big Econ River, winds through pine flatwoods, and offers a dose of quiet Florida nature — no crowds, no stress, just trees, birds, and happy paws. 🐾🌿

πŸ—Ί️ About the Trail

This segment of the Florida Trail covers about 6 miles roundtrip, making it a great half-day outing. It’s part of the Little Big Econ State Forest trail system and showcases some of Central Florida’s most underrated terrain — think shaded woodlands, palm hammocks, elevated boardwalks, and serene riverside sections.

There’s minimal elevation gain, so the trail is mostly easy with a few moderate patches, like soft sand or root-covered sections. We parked at the Lockwood Blvd trailhead and hiked to the Barr Street trailhead before turning around and retracing our steps.

🐾 Simba’s Dog-Friendly Highlights

✔️ Leashed + dog-friendly — Simba was wagging from start to finish.
✔️ Shaded path — lots of tree cover makes this trail perfect even on warmer Florida days.
✔️ River views — plenty of great spots for a water break or a quiet moment by the Econ River.
✔️ Wildlife galore — birds, squirrels, and lots of exciting smells!

Note: Keep your pup leashed — this is a wildlife area, and encounters with gators, snakes, or wild hogs are always a possibility in Florida.

🧭 Trail Tips for Hikers + Dog Parents

πŸ’§ Bring water — while the trail follows the river, there are no drinking water stations.
πŸ₯Ύ Watch your step — some roots and sandy patches can trip you up.
πŸ• Use a harness — better control near narrow boardwalks or wildlife-rich areas.
🦟 Bug spray — especially after rain, the mosquitoes can be active.
πŸ“Έ Look for scenic bridges — perfect photo spots near the river bends!

🚐 RV Traveler Tips

There’s no camping at the trailheads, but if you’re RVing in Central Florida, this is an excellent nature stop. We stayed nearby and made this an easy morning adventure. Plus, it’s close to Oviedo, Geneva, and Sanford, where you can stock up or grab a bite after your hike.
